This is a list of the things we need to understand and accomplish this week. All the links in the box above go to items on this page. I suggest printing out this page and checking off the items as you complete them. This will help you to keep focused and up-to-date. Important Announcement: Congratulations on a job-well-done on the first exam!

This week, we have the pleasure of meeting Ken Howard, Ph.D., P.G., of Geophex, Ltd., an environmental consulting firm in Raleigh, North Carolina. Dr. Howard is an expert in the use of geophysical tools to better understand sub-surface environmental problems.

This should be the first page you come to each time you come to class, so bookmark the URL (address of page). The address won't change, but the contents will. This is where I talk to the class, recap the previous week and give an overview of the upcoming week. The previous week's home page can be read by clicking on "Archived Announcements" at the top of this page. You may need to refer to previous home pages on occasion.

Reading Assignments
Your week 6 folder contains 1 reading assignment:

1. Technical Article, "Diagnosing the Earth"

This article was written by Dr. I. J. Won, a leading researcher in the Geophysical Sciences. Dr. Won does an excellent job of describing how different geophysical methods are used to better understand the earth. He does this by using an analogy of the geophysicist's role with that of a surgeon.

He states, "We, the environmental investigators, act like medical doctors, who open up a patient to find out what's wrong. We dig away so we can see and, we hope, solve the problem; we perform diagnostic surgery on the earth"

Enjoy this eye-opening article!

Web Sites of Interest
Find a website that addresses the use of geophysical techniques in Nicaragua to better understand the environment or to find mineral, fuel,or water resources. Please share your information as well as your website with other classmates in the discussion forum by noon, Thursday, February 10.

Discussion Forum
Following your reading, Dr. Ken Howard will be available to accept any questions you may have on the use of geophysical tools in the environmental sciences. Dr. Howard has agreed to share some interesting websites with you this week and he may also send you some articles showing actual survey data and underground mapping results.

Please post your questions to Dr. Howard in the "Cafe Nica" discussion forum, as I have invited him to our cyber coffee house (he is a coffee lover!).
